    Project Engineer

    UL, Consumer Technology Division, Basingstoke (UK) or Frankfurt (Germany)

    Due to our ongoing growth, UL, is seeking a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Project Engineer to join our Consumer Electronics division, which is one of the most competitive and complex industries when it comes to regulatory and environmental requirements. Depending on your requirements, we are happy for this position to be based in either our UK office in Basingstoke or one of our German offices which are located in either Frankfurt or Munich.  


    The PCB Project Handler will become a subject matter expert for UL safety, performance and PCB projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for analysing the project scope and determining project appropriate specifications. Furthermore, you will work in conjunction with our lab team to determine testing capabilities and setup of new services. Communicate with our customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation and help in establishing suitable test programs for product investigations, analysing test programs for adequacy and sequence and support the preparation of reports for our clients.


    • Determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
    • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and safety and performance requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Acts to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provides technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
    • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing manufacturer's information, applicable standards, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
    • Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants, and establishing completion dates. Determines equipment needed for testing and coordinates laboratory and equipment capabilities. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler of record and/or Reviewer of record as assigned.
    • Communicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
    • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
    • Assists in the development of UL requirements for safety and performance testing. Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyzes test program for adequacy and sequence.


    • University Degree in Engineering (Chemical or Materials, preferred), from an ABET accredited program,
    • Experience in PCB testing (i.e., microsectioning, failure analysis), or PCB manufacturing experience.
    • Excellent communication skills in English – fluent speaking German, Italian and Spanish would also be an advantage
    • Proven ability in Project Management , good attention to detail and capable of working to consistently high quality standards
    • Experience attending customer and project meetings to provide updates and project support
